One of the primary responsibilities of a legislator is to be a good steward of taxpayer dollars. Legislators should only fund projects and programs that represent legitimate functions of government. Sadly, while serving in the state senate, Melanie witnessed many lawmakers who would fund projects that did not represent legitimate functions of government, but instead were pork projects used to buy favor with lobbyists, a specific block of voters, or other special interests groups. Melanie fought against such abuse because that is not a responsible use of your money.
As a state senator, she was often one of only a few lawmakers to vote against bloated bond bills that increased our state’s public debt. Melanie will make sure that projects funded with taxpayer dollars are for legitimate and responsible projects. Keeping government spending under control is critical if we are to grow our economy and keep Mississippi financially stable.
FIGHTING FOR OUR RIGHTS
The right to own private property is a foundational American principle. No government should have the right to take what is rightfully yours. Melanie has fought against the abuse of Eminent Domain for private sector development and will never compromise on this issue.
PRESERVING OUR HISTORY, MONUMENTS, AND FLAG
Melanie understands the importance of history -- to know where we are going we must first know where we have been. Our history paves the way for our future, so it is essential we remember it as it occurred. Liberal attempts to censor our history and remove our monuments are the wrong approach. Political correctness is a dangerous idea. Melanie will fight to preserve our history, not rewrite or erase it. The people of Mississippi have already voted to retain the design of our present state flag. She respects their wishes and will not vote to change it.
Taxpayer dollars invested in education are some of the most important investments we can make. However, that money belongs in the classroom, providing resources for our teachers and students, not to administrators and politicians. Melanie will work to prioritize education spending, placing the money in the classroom where it belongs. She will also work to empower parents, increase teacher pay to the Southeastern average, eliminate burdensome state testing requirements, minimize federal involvement, and repeal Common Core. As trusted professionals, our teachers should be treated with respect and be allowed to focus on teaching, not navigating through unreasonable administrative burdens.
DEFENDING THE SECOND AMENDMENT
Melanie is a staunch supporter of the 2nd Amendment. The right to keep and bear arms is essential to our ability to protect and defend our families and our freedoms. The right to own and use a firearm is an inalienable right of all Mississippians, and Melanie will never compromise on this issue. As a Senator, she authored legislation that would stop any attempt by the federal government to confiscate or register the firearms of Mississippians.
Melanie is 100% pro-life. She knows we have a responsibility to protect the most innocent among us.
In the state senate, she was a strong supporter of the Heartbeat bill and a co-author of numerous other measures to preserve and protect the unborn.
FIGHTING FOR JOBS AND A BETTER ECONOMY
FIGHTING FOR JOBS AND A BETTER ECONOMY
Capitalism has created unparalleled prosperity for our nation. Therefore, it is critical that a lawmaker understands an essential principle of economic growth -- it is not the role of government to create jobs, but instead to create an environment that stimulates job creation and economic productivity. Melanie will trust the private sector, allow businesses to develop wealth, grow, and invest in the future. She will fight to keep taxes low, reduce government red tape, and reward success. She will be a friend to and advocate for our small business community. Melanie has a proven track record in the Senate, being repeatedly recognized as a champion for liberty, economic growth, and business interests across Mississippi.
PROVIDING BETTER HEALTHCARE
Melanie is opposed to Obamacare’s expansion of Medicaid in our state, realizing that if not correctly managed the ever-expanding program will bankrupt our state and nation. She will fight to reform and save Medicaid, not expand an already flawed and fiscally reckless program. Melanie will work to make Medicaid financially solvent. She will also fight to increase healthcare options, lower costs, provide cheaper prescriptions. She will work to make care readily available and affordable to Mississippians by allowing more freedom and competition in the marketplace.
